Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry MP has visited Oxley Group in Cumbria – his third visit to a Sharing in Growth participant company.
Accompanied by local MP John Woodcock, he was welcomed by the Group CEO Garry North.
The Minister met a group of 40 employees representing Oxley’s 160 strong workforce for a 45 minute Q&A session. This covered topics such as public transport, quality of life, the impact of Brexit, education and opportunities for young people. A private meeting then followed where Oxley explained their participation in Sharing in Growth, which was praised by the Minister.
The Northern Powerhouse remit is to drive economic growth through investment in skills, innovation, transport and culture and the Minister commented that he wanted to ensure that people living in the North of England have the opportunity to have a ‘rich cultural life.’ He went on to say that we need to be in a position where the ‘Brightest and best choose to stay in the north, not because they have to but because it’s a great place to live and work’.
Said Garry North: ‘Oxley was delighted to host Jake Berry’s visit, this gave us the opportunity to demonstrate the new leading edge LED technology. It was also a key opportunity for the Minister to meet some of the talented Oxley workforce based at our advanced manufacturing site in Ulverston. Oxley is a Northern Powerhouse Partner and supports the key pillars of the programme, particularly innovation, export and investment in people, all of which have been part of the Oxley DNA since our foundation in 1942.’
